BATD U.K. STAGE & BALLET SCHOLARSHIP REPORT
5TH & 6TH OCTOBER 2019

This year we returned once again to The Deaf School in Doncaster for the annual Stage & Ballet scholarship weekend. Our President Miss Elma Whyte welcomed everyone to the event and introduced the adjudicating panel.

Due to the high numbers of students attending we had a very early start! The first class to begin the day was the Junior Tap/Stage scholarship, followed by the Seniors. The class was beautifully handled by Ms Lauren Hall, who gave everyone a challenging, but extremely enjoyable class. We are extremely grateful to Lauren, who stepped in at the last minute, due to the original lecturer being injured. I don’t think anyone was aware of the short notice she had, due to the professionalism of her class!

We finished the day with the Junior Ballet class, a very large entry meant the class was divided into two. This class was taken by Ms Laura McCulloch, who worked as hard as all the students on the floor! We continued the next morning with the Senior Ballet class, again presented by Ms McCulloch, a very beautiful, balletic class.

We then continued with the Junior Modern Dance/Jazz scholarship. Again we had a very high entry and so the class was split into two. Our lecturer this time was Mr Matthew Malthouse, who was making a very welcome return. Matthew gives a most exciting and dynamic class, with every student working hard to perform, in exactly the style he asks for. We then had the Senior class who finished off the weekend beautifully, working equally as hard and thoroughly enjoying the experience of working with Matthew. Well done to everyone! Thank you to all the parents and teachers for your continuing support.

Thanks go to our adjudicators for the weekend. All the lecturer’s took a turn on the adjudicating panel, joining Ms Lynsey MacDougall the Co-Principal of the Urdang College. On Sunday we were delighted to have Mr Matthew Croke join the panel, and wish him a speedy recovery. Fingers crossed he will be well enough to come back next time and give a class!

Thanks go to Lynsey, who once again offered two students the chance to attend The Urdang summer school next year. They were Georgia Collins (Maloney School) and Megan Gallacher (Elma Whyte Performing Arts). Good luck girls we are sure you’ll thoroughly enjoy yourselves!

Lastly the Stage and ballet committee wish to thank Miss Lauren Calderbank, Miss Lois Stothard and Miss Helen Rose for giving up their time to help at the weekend. We very much appreciate all you do.

Hazel Munroe

Finally we would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to the Staff at the deaf school, nothing is too much bother for them and everything is met with a smile! Look forward to seeing them again in two years’ time.
